It is an uncomplicated form composed of a melting watch draped over the branch of a tree. In his own words Dalí explains this imagery; "Materialization of the flexibility of time and the indivisibility of time and space. Time is not rigid. It is one with space - fluid". In this sculptural form Dalí examines the human perception of time - when we are involved in enjoyable activities or in work that absorbs all our attention, 'time flies', but when we are mired in boredom, time drags. The flaccid watch no longer 'keeps' time - it does not quantify its passage. Accordingly, the speed of our time depends only on us. |
